Heathers (1988)

An American black comedy directed by Michael Lehmann, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.
A girl in a popular clique at high school is taught true human values by a homocidal maniac.
This is one of those movies that can be replayed in my brain without turning on the computer. It's a very popular movie and a very good movie. In fact, I don't want to spoil anything. One interesting not from my quick read of the Wikipedia page is that Winona Ryder said she looked like her character in Beetlejuice (1988) at the time of casting. If you haven't seen it, watch it now. I rate it best.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

An American horror directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman.
We all know the Dracula story.
Another good one in a row. Also very easy to mock: Francis For Crappola made Shaft Stroker's Jackula. Casting was perfect on this. Unbeknownst in 1992 was the fact that the leading couple would be paired again in Destination Wedding (2018). I have generally believed that children from this fictional union would be great actors. Visual effects were great, camerawork and editing looked good. I'll stop. I rate this best Watch it!

Sex and Death 101 (2007)

An American comedy drama directed by Daniel Waters, starring Winona Ryder and Patton Oswalt.
While a woman is going around using chemicals to put men into comas, a man recieves and email list of all the women he has and will have sex with. Some guys in a white room explain it to him and he grapples with wanting to fornicate his way through the list or try to negate it.
Pretty crappy. Most critics seem to agree this time. I thought it was vapidly trying to fill theater seats by appealing to men's carnal desires. It's supposed to be a comedy, but nothing was funny. The editing was too quick and there was not enough plot to fill just over an hour and a half. The characters were shallow, Even though the main character changed, he did so in a most superficial way. The camera-work looked fine, but the audio had too much whispered dialogue. I'm rating this poor because it's not worth watching and I didn't like it.

Night on Earth (1991)

An American drama directed by Jim Jarmusch, starring Winona Ryder, Gena Rowlands, Giancarlo Esposito, Isaach de Bankole, Beatrice Dalle and Roberto Benigni.
5 taxi drivers in Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, Rome and Helsinki pick up people and have conversations with them.
Awesome "slice of life" vignettes. My favorite driver was Roberto Benigni in Rome and my favorite passenger was Beatrice Dalle in Paris. For being set in cars, the camera-work showed lots more than just the inside of cabs. The varied settings really gave the viewer a clear idea of locations. The segues were accomplished by a fade to black, cut to labeled clocks on a wall. The camera goes in on the clocks and fades to a map where a location is highlighted and then fades into the next scene. The audio started in English (LA and NY) but switched languages with locations. The version that I watched had hard coded subtitles. The audio mix was actually good. I could hear what people were saying and the music was at a tasteful level. If you liked Coffee and Cigarettes (2003), you will like this. I rate it best for being looking and sounding good as well as for plots and characters. Watch it!

Black Swan (2010)

An American thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky, starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder.
A ballet dancer works hard to get the leading role in a show, but her mental stability and personal relationships are falling apart.
This took time to get cool, but was well worth the wait. Obviously, the climax scene was my favorite part. The plot had some depth and the main character was very well developed. The camera-work was good and there were some special effects used. The pacing starts out very slow and builds speed toward the ending. Overall, this is what I'm looking for in a good movie. I rate this one of those solid green ratings. Watch it!

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

A science fiction directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder.
An inventor makes a man from scratch, but dies before completing his work. The man ends up with scissors for hands and a door to door sales-woman finds him. She takes him home and tries to indoctrinate him into "normal" society.
Let me begin by saying that this is one of my favorite films because of entertainment value. There are some quirks that I would like to point out. There is the idea of the anthropomorphizing machines and mechanizing humans. This is part of the new world order scam that's being pulled on us at every opportunity. They (the illuminati) want to put computer parts into human bodies to track us and control us. Stand by and watch and it will be so. Take action (like not buying into their crap and boycotting their companies) and we may have a chance of staying human. The location of the mountain with mansion on top is totally unbelievable because of it's proximity to the housing track. When the police are chasing Edward, they drive extremely slow, as if they did not mean to catch him, but to chase him away. This may be the case, as the cop says that he is worried about Edward and seems sympathetic to his problems. I do find that the pastel houses, clothes and cars were used in good taste to contrast the creepy mansion and leather-clad anti-hero. I will conclude by rating this good.

The Crucible (1996)

A drama directed by Nicholas Hytner, starring Winona Ryder.
Witches are presumably discovered in colonial America.
The plot got very jumbled and all of the characters seemed the same. The style and pace were a little off as well. I'm rating this poor just because it wasn't done as well as it could have been done.

Lucas (1986)

a drama directed by David Seltzer, starring Corey Haim, Charlie Sheen and Winona Ryder.
A dorky kid is attracted to a new girl in town and they become friends. When school starts, the dork is picked on and the girl becomes the romantic interest of the captain of the football team who protects the dork from the other football players. The dork quits band and tries to play football with the expected results.
This was really sappy and quasi-romantic. The part that I found funny was the ending. The Professor Brothers describe it best in their video, Fliff Night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp3wTXYoCCg . One brother is describing to the other how he felt when he was buying drinks for people at a party and it's EXACTLY what happens at the end of this film. Anyway, I'm rating this o.k. because it was totally predictable and mediocre.

1969 (1988)

A drama directed by Ernest Thompson, starring Robert Downey Jr., Kiefer Sutherland and Winona Ryder.
A pair of friends go back to their home town and one's brother goes to fight in Vietnam. They have various adventures until the soldier brother comes back dead.
I thought this was boring. Winona Ryder is always attractive and she was the best part. The plot was unnecessarily convoluted and the style was bland. I'm rating this poor.

Great Balls of Fire! (1989)

A music biography directed by Jim McBride, starring Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder.
Jerry Lee Lewis becomes a rock star playing the piano and singing. He then marries his (much) younger cousin.
The music was the same throughout the film, as if it were just one long song. The characters were static and the plot was stereotypical. I'm rating it o.k. because there was some entertainment value.

Dracula (1992)

A horror by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves.
A Transylvanian immortal buys property in London and moves there. He tries to take a wealthy English woman for his bride, but her male guardians protect her.
This is a decent retelling of the Dracula story, but it is more based on the 1931 film than the book. The style and pacing were great, but there were so many inaccuracies from the book that I won't talk about characters or plot. Just based on what's there, I'm rating it good for entertainment value alone.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

A drama directed by Richard Linklater, starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder.
An undercover police officer observes the activities of his friends in an attempt to bust their dealer.
Rotoscoping! YES! It's extremely effective in this film and probably eliminated a special effects budget that would have been astronomical otherwise. The characters are good and all that, but there are some parts that I would like to mention as my favorites. When the young men return to their house and think that it has been broken into, Keanu has a classic Reeves moment and says "The doodads, man!". Another interesting section is Freck's attempted suicide. This doesn't get awesome because it strikes too close to home and makes me feel weird. I'm rating it good.
