Caveman (1981)

An American comedy directed by Carl Gottlieb, starring Ringo Starr and Dennis Quaid.
A physically weaker, but more intelligent caveman is cast out of his clan. He meets other outcasts and forms a new clan with them, but they are always opposed by the main character's former clan.
I'm glad I watched this, but wouldn't watch it again anytime soon. The hour and 25 minute duration seemed to go by quickly. Although the premise was simplistic, many sub-plots and various adventures were included. It was all communicated very clearly. I liked that the hero was the intelligent one against a Bluto-esque adversary. Dialogue and acting are an interesting subject for this film. The dialogue was all in nonsense caveman words, although the Asian caveman knew proper English. This could not have been pulled off without expressive acting. Call it over the top, absurd and comical, but the actors did a great job. Apparently, my sense of humor belongs in the late '70s and early '80s because I found this quite funny. Sets and costumes reminded me of classic caveman flicks like One Million Years B.C. (1966). The camera-work was mostly very straight forward and I could tell that it was meant to showcase the jokes more than provide accurate indication of geographic relationships. The dinosaur special effects were comical stop-motion and, again, reminded me of classic films of the '50s and '60s. I won't spoil it, but the best stop motion dinosaur is during the climax. Audio was pretty standard of the time. Everything was mixed right, but I found the soundtrack a little cheesy, hokey and cliche. Roger Ebert gave this 1.5/4 stars, it has 5.7/10 on IMDB, 3/5 of both ratings on AllMovie and 24% tomatometer, 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. 49% average is not good by any standards. I disagree with other critics on this. I thought it was funny because I've seen the all old caveman movies and got the jokes about them. If you don't understand what is being mocked, you will never find the joke funny. I rate this adequate.

Dragonheart (1996)

An American fantasy adventure directed by Rob Cohen, starring Dennis Quaid and the voice of Sean Connery.
A king dies in a battle against peasants and his son is wounded. A dragon donates half of his heart to save the prince (now king) and they are linked via hearts. The new king is a merciless tyrant. A knight who was at the heart-joining ritual swears to hunt dragons and when he comes upon the dragon with half a heart, they become friends.
My downloading of this film alerted Frontier that I was distributing copyrighted material. Was it worth it? No. The film is not so great. The plot is inferior and the characters are stereotypical. I never should have downloaded such mainstream Hollywood bullshit in the first place. I have a feeling that these qualities are what lead to my detection on the Illuminati's radar. Ordinarily, this would get an o.k. rating because of CG monster points (the dragon was ravishing), but under the circumstances, I was not able to enjoy it. I'm rating this bad, not because it's a bad film, but because it got me fucked over royally. You can look forward to reviews of public domain films. Also, I have a long list of DVDs that I have not reviewed yet.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

A disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Dennis Quaid.
Giant storms freeze the earth. A son is in New York City and his father heads out through the storm to rescue him.
This was stereotypical and so overproduced. It also tries to back up Al Gore about his climate change hoax. The earth's temperature is regulated by the sun (imagine that!). When the earth is far away, it is cold. When the earth is close, it is hot. This has nothing to do with greenhouse gasses or carbon taxes in any way. I'm rating this film poor because it's basically pointless.

Far From Heaven (2002)

A drama by Todd Haynes, starring Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid.
A seemingly happily married couple in the '50s have problems. The husband is gay and the wife is attracted to a black man.
The plot and characters left much to be desired. Maybe I just didn't like them... I thought the style and production value were good, but the pace was very slow. I'm rating this poor because I got bored and it wasn't what I would choose to watch.

Jaws series (1975 - 1987)

A horror directed by Steven Spielberg, Jeannot Szwarc, Joe Alves and Joseph Sargent, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, Dennis Quaid and Lorraine Gary.
A big shark shows up and starts killing people.
The first 2 films were alright, but after that, it got boring. The plot got stale and the style stayed the same throughout the series. Apparently, there's only so much a film maker can do with shark attacks. This review isn't short because I'm lazy. It's short because the films were so simple. I'm rating the series o.k.

Innerspace (1987)

A science fiction comedy directed by Joe Dante, starring Dennis Quaid.
A pilot in a pod is miniaturized to be injected into a rabbit, but burglars raid the laboratory and a scientist escapes with the syringe. After being shot by a hit man, the scientist injects the pod into a nervous man who is then chased by the burglars and the hit man. The pilot establishes contact with the man and tries to guide him through the problems that arise.
At 799 posts, I'm getting tired of this. Anyway, it was ultra-'80s and a little cheesy. The characters were good and the plot kept me interested. As a side-note, the credits mention "co-starring Kevin MaCarthy". My neighbor's name is Kevin McCarthy, but I didn't see him in the film. I'm rating it adequate.

Dreamscape (1984)

A fantasy directed by Joseph Ruben, starring Dennis Quaid.
A man with psychic powers re-enters a scientific experiment that has changed since he left. They now link 2 people's dreams together. He finds out that there are powerful government agents working with this project with evil goals.
I knew the main character looked familiar. He's Davidge from Enemy Mine and Jerry Lee Lewis from Great Balls of Fire! This film was on the cheesy side, but that's o.k. I liked the dream sequences and the plot seemed plausible. I'm rating it adequate.

Great Balls of Fire! (1989)

A music biography directed by Jim McBride, starring Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder.
Jerry Lee Lewis becomes a rock star playing the piano and singing. He then marries his (much) younger cousin.
The music was the same throughout the film, as if it were just one long song. The characters were static and the plot was stereotypical. I'm rating it o.k. because there was some entertainment value.

Enemy Mine (1985)

A science fiction directed by Wolfgang Petersen, starring Dennis Quaid.
A human and an alien crash land on the same planet during a war between their races and are forced to live together to survive.
I personally like this film for it's sentimental value. The characters are good and the style works very well. There were even some humorous parts. I'm rating it adequate.
