The Screaming Skull (1958)

An American horror directed by Alex Nicol.
A man and his second wife move into his dead ex-wife's house. The second wife has recently been released from a sanitarium after watching her parents drown in a boating accident. The man's first wife had died at the house in a pond in the garden. They meet with a local reverend and his wife who come to visit as well as the retarded gardener who grew up with the first wife. While the husband is away, the second wife is scared by a skull found in the house.
I thought that the plot and characters were relatively interesting for the most part. Figuring out who was playing with the skull kept my interest. There were some really good shots of the skull superimposed on scenes of the garden at night and an even better shot of a whole skeleton in a shroud. The audio and video were pretty crappy with dead air hiss and incorrect exposures obscuring details. I think that the black and white video worked well for the previously mentioned skull shots, but the rest of the film could have benefited from color technology. Seeing green gardens in the daytime shots would have added contrast to the "scary" night shots of the skull. Overall, I think there were good aspects to this bad movie. I rate it tolerable.

I Bury the Living (1958)

An American horror thriller directed by Albert Band, starring Richard Boone.
A businessman is appointed as chairman of a committee in charge of a cemetery. The groundskeeper shows him a map with white pins for reserved spaces and black pins for occupied spaces. When the chairman accidentally puts black pins in reserved spaces, the people die shortly after.
The director, Albert Band is Charles Band's (of Full Moon fame) father. I can see a little bit of family resemblence in how the film was made. There were some dark and menacing shots that were done well and correctly exposed like Charles would do. What I'm trying to say is that the style reminded me very vaguely of Full Moon films. The plot was relatively simple and only the main character was a dynamic character, changing as the events took place. The video was black and white, but correctly exposed and there were no editing mistakes. The audio was a little trebbly, but not bad. I rate this o.k. as in it's o.k. to watch once.

The Wild Women of Wongo (1958)

An American comedy directed by James L. Wolcott.
On a tropical island, there is a tribe with ugly men and beautiful women. Nearby is a tribe with ugly women and handsom men. The tribes meet.
This was insipid banality all the way through. The boring and obvious plot involved stereotypical and shallow characters. It lacked any good style, although the stupid parrot's narration can differentiate it from any other film. The pacing was all wrong, with short scenes for important events and long, drawn out scenes for stupid details. Unfortunately, even the beautiful women earned no female anatomy points. I have to rate it bad because I see no reason for anyone to watch it.

The Incredible Petrified World (1958)

An American adventure directed by Jerry Warren, starring John Carradine.
A group of people try to explore the deep ocean in a diving bell, but get cut off from their surface contact. After the mishap with the bell, they don scuba gear and swim into a network of caves that are supplied with air by a volcano.
The lackluster plot and "B" acting made this generally uninteresting. It looked and sounded older than '58 to me, so we've got poor production value as well. I know what crappy movies are and don't feel the need to get verbose about it. I rate this bad for being poorly made and boring. Don't watch it.

The Day the Sky Exploded (1958)

An Italian science fiction directed by Paolo Heush.
A manned rocket is launched into space and there are technical problems, causing the pilot to eject and return safely. The rest of the rocket continues into space where it alters the course of asteroids, which are now headed toward the Earth.
Italian trash! The plot was boring and the characters didn't matter in the least. Bad audio included a "WWWWWUUUOOOOOAAAAEEEEIIII!" sound that repeated quite frequently. Bad video contained no aliens, robots or foreign worlds and was dull to watch. I don't feel the need to continue berating this snoozer. I rate it shit. Don't watch it.

She Gods of Shark Reef (1958)

A Hawaiian American adventure film directed by Roger Corman.
A pair of brothers are shipwrecked in a storm near an island that has a reef nearby. One of the brothers is a criminal and the other is the captain of the boat that sinks. They find only women on the island who have vague superstitions about sharks and the nearby reef.
This is one of those films where I ask myself why it was made. Being of such low production value and having a name that has nothing to do with the plot, my assumption would be for the small amount of money that would be made by it. Another question brought up is the female island population's form of reproduction. Is it anything like that of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park? The simple plot was full of holes and only mildly interesting at best. Some of the island women were good looking, but no female anatomy points were earned. The video was super-grainy and the audio was very treble oriented. There was a short sequence involving traditional Hawaiian music and this was probably the best scene in the entire film for that reason. I rate it poor because it's just not worth watching.

Tarzan and the Trappers (1958)

An American made for TV action film directed by Charles F. Haas, Sandy Howard and H. Bruce Humberstone, starring Gordon Scott.
Unscrupulous trappers are capturing animals in Tarzan's jungle and he fights to stop them.
The super-lame plot and cliche characters didn't make sense until I looked this up on Wikipedia. It was originally supposed to be a TV series, but that plan was abandoned and it was released as a movie. Regardless of what it is supposed to be, it is not good. Besides not liking Tarzan films in general, this one was poorly executed. I rate it bad.

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)

An American science fiction directed by Nathan H. Juran.
A woman whose husband is cheating on her comes into contact with a giant alien. The alien infects her with something and she grows to be a giant as well.
The plot was SO LAME! I know they didn't have the best technology in 1958, but they did have brains. Apparently, they chose not to use them. This film was made with one thing in mind: making a quick buck. I watched it all the way through and didn't like it at all. That means I get to rate it bad. It feels good to rip on a shit-flick after seeing so many good films.

The Hidden Fortress (1958)

An adventure directed by Akira Kurosawa, starring Toshiro Mifune.
2 peasants are on their way back from a war when they find gold in a stick. Suddenly a man appears, claiming to be Rokurota Makabe, a famous general. The peasants agree to travel with him and help him find the rest of the gold. While they are looking for the gold, a woman shows up who they think is the princess. The group all head out together (with the gold that was hidden in plain view) and run into various troubles on their way home.
The plot twists in this film lead the viewer to question what will happen next and the characters are good. The main characters (the 2 peasants) are actually the comic relief. The scenes of people running and hiding from gunfire were a little fake, but what do you expect in 1958? Overall, I thought it was good, so that is how I will rate it.

The Blob (1958)

A horror directed by Irvin Yeaworth.
A globular monster emerges from a meteorite and begins to consume the residents of a small town.
The audio was good and amazingly, the video was in color.
This seems to be the basic structure that all horror-monster movies are built around. The young witnesses are unbelieved by the police until the situation escalates to a certain level and a solution to the problem is found by accident. This early rendition of that plot was pretty clean and I liked the intro theme. Seeing how the year is 2010, though, that plot is so over-done it's not even funny. I'm rating it o.k. for being pretty good, but blending in with the crowd.

Vertigo (1958)

A psychological thriller by Alfred Hitchcock.
A man with a fear of heights also has problems with people he knows falling to their deaths.
The audio was good. The video was a little dark.
check out: This film contains the famous "cross section of a tree" scene.
It was an o.k. movie. Most of the plot happens at the end and much of the film doesn't make any sense until the end.
