Track 29 (1988)

A British American psychological thriller directed by Nicolas Roeg, starring Theresa Russell, Gary Oldman, Christopher Lloyd, Colleen Camp and Seymour Cassel.
A woman whose husband neglects her meets a stranger in a restaurant and begins a complex relationship with him. The husband spends all of his time with model trains or cheating on his wife with a nurse at the hospital he works at.
This was that type of strange that only Nicolas Roeg can create. The plot was a little on the confusing side. Is this young man real or does the woman have an imaginary friend? Add the inconclusive ending and it's nearly incoherent. The characters were definitely acted very well. Being famous movie stars and all, they lived up to their reputations. The video was mostly straight forward storytelling. There were some odd shots and scenes as well. My favorite was the young man playing with the husband's train set. The audio was shoddy and uneven. This was the standard inaudible dialogue problem. Overall, a weird film by a weird director. I'm giving it the weird pink rating because I think it's his strangest work.

Zenith (2010)

An American psychological thriller by Vladan Nikolic.
A young man is given a video made by an older man who was researching the Illuminati and conspiracies. The young man tries to find the whole series of videos in order to watch the whole story.
I was able to get the first 2 parts of the film legally, so that's all I can review. What I saw was great. The plot and characters were very interesting. The style was cool and the production value was high quality. I'm rating it awesome. It would get a best rating if I were able to watch the entire film.

Vanilla Sky (2001)

An American psychological thriller by Cameron Crowe, starring Tom Cruise, penelope cruz, Kurt Russell and Cameron Diaz.
A man gets in a car wreck after cheating on his girlfriend and after that, reality becomes distorted.
This was just plot and character crazy, but the style was "new movie too perfect" all the way through. I thought the plot was interesting, but not good. The characters were likewise. I'm rating this o.k. because it's just a regular, mass produced hollywood movie.

The Good Son (1993)

A thriller directed by Joseph Ruben, starring Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin.
A boy whose mother died goes to live wit relatives. Their son is a total hellraiser and plans to kill people.
The characters and plot were decent. The style was alright because of the date. Entertainment value also played a role. I'm rating this adequate.

Secret Window (2004)

A psychological thriller directed by David Koepp, written by Stephen King, starring Johnny Depp.
An author is stalked by a man who claims that his writing was copied.
This was typical thriller stuff. Johnny Depp acts crazy, big deal. I thought it was mediocre, so it gets an o.k. rating so it can blend in with the crowd better.

American Psycho (2000)

A psychological thriller directed by Mary Harron, based on the book by Bret Easton Ellis.
A rich and successful man is mysteriously driven to kill more and more people at night, while leading a seemingly normal life by day.
Despite this film being new and mainstream, I actually enjoyed it. There were some shocking and funny parts, so I'm rating it good. About the picture, it's too bad his nail gun isn't plugged in.

The Machinist (2004)

A psychological thriller directed by Brad Anderson.
A very crazy and very thin man begins having problems with his boring life. When he asks others about his problems, they act like he's imagining things. As more and more things go wrong, he finally figures out what's causing this situation.
This movie is really crazy. It tries to suck you in and fuck with your head just like what happens to the main character. There are no special effects and the camera work is actually good. The surprise plot twist at the end is very shocking. You would have to see it to understand why I'm rating it awesome.

Sliver (1993)

A psychological thriller directed by Phillip Noyce.
A rich and successful woman moves into a large apartment building and falls in love with the building's owner who has the whole place under surveilence.
There was so much overt sexuality in this movie that it was almost softcore porn. Couples having sex became a common sight. What I really found odd was the fact that the building owner's walls contained Danzig and Megadeth posters, but it always seemed like he was listening to techno. Another odd thing is that the surveilence system supposedly cost millions, but it was all in black and white. I didn't hate this, but it wasn't good and there were too many of these slight oversights. I'm giving it an orange not so great rating.

The Omen series (1976 - 2006)

Psychological thrillers directed by Richard Donner, Don Taylor, Graham Baker, John Moore, Jorge Montesi and Dominique Othenin-Girard.
The antichrist is born and his father is led on a quest to destroy him with the help of individuals working in the religion industry.
The first few films in this series were really good, but the 90s one was uber-cheesy and the 2006 remake made me question why it was even made. In the film in which Damien is grown up, he is portrayed by Sam Neil (Dr. Grant of Jurassic Park fame). These films made me want to watch the Exorcist series, so if you're into that kind of thing, this might be up your alley. I'm rating it o.k. because I wasn't very excited about it.

After Life (2010)

A psychological thriller directed by Angieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo.
A teacher dies in a car accident and wakes up on the operating table in the local morgue. Evidence that she is still alive presents itself at every turn until she is buried. Her cop boyfriend tries to investigate to see if she is still alive.
The undertaker is portrayed as a villain in this film and we can only assume that he is the only one who can communicate with the dead people. He seems to hate the living and the corpses that he works with and takes a young boy as an apprentice because the boy seems drawn to corpses. I thought it was interesting, so I'm rating it good.

The Others (2001)

A psychological thriller directed by Alejandro Amenabar.
2 children live with their mother in a large house. The children are not allowed to see daylight and when new servants arrive, they are introduced to procedures that keep light out. The girl sees and talks to ghosts and when the mother notices strange things happening, new facts come to light.
a/v was fine.
This film had great set and setting. It was goth and gloom all the way through. Unfortunately, everything else about it was mediocre. It just barely makes it to o.k. by the setting. Otherwise, I would have to say bad.

Gothika (2003)

A psychological thriller directed by Mathieu Kassovitz.
A psychologist is put in the asylum where she works when she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of her husband who is the boss there.
check out: Miranda'sevasion of the guards. She seems to have trained with the Navy Seals.
This movie shows why it's better to watch films BY insane people than ABOUT them. It's very much mainstream Hollywood bullshit and you can tell by the camera work. I just fail to see any value in this type of thing.

The Jacket (2005)

A psychological thriller directed by John Maybury.
A man suspected of killing a cop is put in a sanitarium where he receives drugs that make him travel into the future.
check out: I couldn't help but think "let's do the time warp agaaaaaaain"
Mental home movies are some of my favorites. The characters and plot were worthwhile, so I'm saying good. I'm also wishing for the drugs, drawer and straight jacket.

Copycat (1995)

A psychological thriller directed by Jon Amiel.
Sigourney Weaver is a criminal psychologist who develops agoraphobia after she is attacked at a convention. A year later, a serial killer begins to copy the murders of his fore-runners and Sigourney is supposed to help solve the case.
The audio and video were good.
check out: I know where Michael Jackson got the inspiration for his nose job. (picture)
I think I might have seen this before... no, wait! That was the slew of other movies that are JUST LIKE this one. I didn't hate it, but you don't earn a good rating by blending in with the crowd.

eXistenZ (1999)

A psychological thriller directed by David Cronenberg.
People inside a game play a game in which they "port" into the game through their spinal cords. There are people who want to kill the makers of the game regardless of what level the game is on (like game inside a game inside a game type of level).
The audio and video were good.
check out: The sexual looking game pods and porting system. I guess this was inspiration for the male enhancement product called extenze.
This is nothing new to me. I'm used to the circular reasoning of one reality inside another. For a science fiction psychological thriller type of movie, it bends reality quite well and I like the little 2 headed amphibians. This is one of the o.k.s that could easily have been good, but it just didn't have that extra special something to make it unique.

The Ring (2002)

A psychological thriller directed by Gore Verbinski.
A woman who watches a video that is rumored to kill viewers decides to get to the bottom of this phenomena.
The audio and video were good.
check out: The infamous film is pretty cool, but is that a box of animated penises I see?
This was a lot scarier when I watched it a long time ago. Now it fits into that category of early 2000s "supposed to be scary" movies. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just that there are so many better movies that it's not good.

Vertigo (1958)

A psychological thriller by Alfred Hitchcock.
A man with a fear of heights also has problems with people he knows falling to their deaths.
The audio was good. The video was a little dark.
check out: This film contains the famous "cross section of a tree" scene.
It was an o.k. movie. Most of the plot happens at the end and much of the film doesn't make any sense until the end.

Apt Pupil (1998)

A thriller directed by Bryan Singer, based on a book by Stephen King.
A young neo-nazi finds out that there is an old German officer in his neighborhood and starts meeting this man to hear stories about the brutal extermination of Jews.
The audio was in whisper-blast and the video was a little dark.
check out: Drawing swastikas in school.
I found the whole plot to be unbelievable, the characters sucked and the high school thing is overdone. You might like this if you're with the German Socialist party.

pi (1998)

a psychological thriller directed by darren aronofsky
you know how it goes, there's a guy with serious mental problems who's obsessed with numbers. he's got a jewish friend who's looking for a "god number" and another older friend who was obsessed with pi. there are stock market people following him and the people who live in the same building as him think he's weird. his computer has a glitch and spits out a 216 digit number that's supposed to be the answer to everyone's questions and he gets even crazier.
the video is in black and white. the one I watched had italian subtitles. the audio is really annoying. they put in a stupid techno track because it was the late 90s and there's a scene where the phone is ringing for at least 5 minutes straight.
despite the low audio score, I think this is good. the psychological thriller genre isn't my favorite, but this was a good one. go ahead and watch it.
