A British American science fiction directed by Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean and Michael Pena.
A hasty takeoff from Mars leaves one astronaut stranded. He must survive with the equipment he has there while a rescue is arranged.
This was very long in duration, but the pacing and action held my interest. The writing was full of stereotypical cliches, mainly in the dialogue. The plot held my attention, but I think the characters were a little shallow and stereotypical. There were also some sections of the plot that were not believable, even in a science fiction world. The camera-work was good, including lots of shot variety, movement and good composition. I could see everything that was going on. The audio was not so great. Although the dialogue was audible, the music selection was horrid. This is from 2015, not 1975. The number of characters was astronomical, but number of locations was slightly limited. Obviously, the sets, costumes and special effects took up much of the 108 million dollar budget. I think the goal of the film was to lure the money from a general family audience. I rate this o.k. because entertainment value balanced cliches.
In ancient Egyptian mythology, a dead person's soul would be weighed against the feather of truth in a ritual called a psychostasy. If their soul was lighter than the feather, it would ascend into the afterlife. Heavy souls were devoured by Maat, eater of the dead. Good films go to hard drive heaven while the recycle bin eats the rest.

True Grit (2010)
An American western directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.
A girl hires an old cowboy to track down the man who killed her father.
This was pretty accurate to the original. It was more violent and more graphic though. It seemed as though Rooster was nastier, Mattie was younger and they suffered through tougher times together. The plot held my attention and I cared about the characters. It was shot well and things made sense. The pacing was a little on the slow side and style more contemplative. I really liked Jeff Bridges in this. His acting fir the Rooster part very well. Overall, a pretty cool flick. I'll rate this good. Watch it!

The Rainmaker (1997)
An American courtroom drama directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Jon Voight, Mickey Rourke and Virginia Madsen.
A new lawyer takes a difficult case involving health insurance.
I don't like watching games of Lawyers & Lawsuits. The plot does not interest me and I don't care what happens to the characters. Everything made sense and the characters were acted decently. The camera-work was nothing to write home about and the slow pacing made this seem longer than it actually was. Overall, I was not interested. I rate this poor.

The Departed (2006)

A crime film directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon.
An informant for the Irish mafia is placed inside the Boston police force, while the Boston police force plants an informant in the Irish mafia.
This is a newer classic crime film with a pretty good cast. This means I liked the characters and the plot. Obviously, there is a lot of talking in code and lots of shooting. It's overproduced, but I think that actually helps in this case. I'm rating it good because I like it and because I'm tired of giving bad reviews.

Gerry (2002)

An adventure by Gus Van Sant, Casey Affleck and Matt Damon.
A pair of young men get lost in the desert.
More Gus Van Sant! There were only 2 characters and very sparse dialogue. The characters do some pretty stupid things like jumping off of a tall rock, keeping walking when they are clearly headed in the wrong direction and constantly changing the direction of their walk. Oh, well, it's a movie and that type of stupidity should be expected. Overall, I found it a little boring to just watch these dudes walk. I'm rating it o.k. because I've seen much worse.
