A German American romance directed by Robert Altman, starring Richard Gere, Helen Hunt and Laura Dern.
A gynecologist has many problems with many women.
I've rated bad audio before because of not being able to hear things. This time, I'm pointing it out because of hearing too many things. There were scenes with rooms full of women, all speaking at the same time in a cacophony. I could tell this was written by a woman (Anne Rapp) because the men spoke like women when they were out hunting or golfing. Everyone was rich and (bringing back a 1970s/1980s theme) had a big bottle of liquor in their desk at work. I really didn't notice anything else about it. The plot was convoluted and there were too many characters. The camera-work looked alright and the editing was probably pretty quick. I rate it poor because I wish I had not watched it.
In ancient Egyptian mythology, a dead person's soul would be weighed against the feather of truth in a ritual called a psychostasy. If their soul was lighter than the feather, it would ascend into the afterlife. Heavy souls were devoured by Maat, eater of the dead. Good films go to hard drive heaven while the recycle bin eats the rest.

Popeye (1980)
An American musical comedy directed by Robert Altman, starring Robin Williams.
Popeye, the sailor arrives in a town with an over-zealous taxman and a woman who is about to wed a villain. After encountering the woman on the street and finding an abandoned baby with her, the trio of Popey Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea is formed. As they struggle against Bluto, Popeye finds his long lost father, Poopdeck Pappy.
This should not have been a musical. The stunts and special effects were moderately entertaining, but it was otherwise mediocre at best. I really don't think there is any more to write about it. I rate it tolerable.

California Split (1974)
An American comedy directed by Robert Altman, starring George Segal and Elliott Gould.
A pair of gamblers meet and become friends. One of them is in debt so they go to Reno and gamble some more.
An artfully made nothing. The pacing was noticeably slower than the current 4 second average shot length trend. Calling the plot sparse would be an extreme understatement. Some stuff does happen like when the angry poker player reappears. Characters were written very well. The 2 main protagonists made a great "straight man funny man" team. I think that lots of the dialogue was added after filming by voice-over. Locations looked good to me. There seemed to be a good mix of seedy and reputable gambling establishments. Camera-work was amazingly artful. There were some longer shots of the main characters in crowds that looked best to me. Audio was correctly mixed, but sometimes a little too busy. IMDb has a rating of 7.3/10 for this, AllMovie has it at 4/5 site and user ratings and Rotten Tomatoes lists 93% Tomatometer with 84% audience score for an average of 82%. Although that is lower than I would grade, it's in the neighborhood. I rate this good. You should watch it if you pay attention to cinematography.

Remember My Name (1978)
A drama directed by Alan Rudolph, produced by Robert Altman.
A man's ex-wife comes back into his life to reclaim him.
The plot and characters were alright, but I thought that the plot was not explained well enough. It just seemed to jump right into the middle of the story. The style and production value were a little lacking. I'm rating this o.k.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)
A western directed by Robert Altman.
A gambler and a professional prostitute build a successful brothel. Businessmen from out of town want to buy it, but the gambler refuses their price. The businessmen summon bounty hunters to kill the gambler and take his brothel.
This film was long (2 hours), but felt even longer because of the slow pace. The production quality was absolutely terrible. The plot and characters were alright, so I'm rating this o.k.

Brewster McCloud (1970)

A comedy directed by Robert Altman.
A young man is training to fly as he is building wings. Meanwhile, a scientist/narrator is explaining facts about birds. The police are looking for the boy, as he may be the one who is murdering people in the city. A woman who is apparently his mother watches over him and the girl from the health food store goes to see him in order to deliver food and masturbate. He meets another girl who has stolen a race car and everyone gets involved in a chase.
The plot was really hard to understand, but the characters were good. I thought the style was too weird (mark that one on the calendar) and the pace was kind of screwy too. I'm rating this adequate because there were some cool things about it, but it confused more than it entertained.

Vincent & Theo (1990)

An artist biography directed by Robert Altman.
Vincent van Gogh's art dealer brother is upset with him. Vincent falls in love with a pregnant prostitute and eventually goes crazy.
The style was very dark and there was a lot of anger involved in this film. There was also a heavy emphasis on women relieving themselves in primitive conditions. The characters were good, but always upset and the plot was alright. I'm rating this adequate. The pissing scenes saved it from a worse review.

short cuts (1993)

a drama directed by robert altman
the tragic and annoying stories of many people are followed in a disjointed manner. marital infidelity and general arguments take place for 3 hours.
the video looked fine and there was good jazz to be heard in the soundtrack.
I want that 3 hours back. never have I ever seen such a waste of time cross the screen.
