Moby Dick (1956)

An American adventure film directed by John Huston, starring Gregory Peck and Orson Welles.
A man intent on joining the crew of a whaling ship meets a harpooner at an inn. Together they board the Pequod under the command of Captain Ahab who is in search of a white whale.
The film itself wasn't too bad. The plot and characters kept me interested and it was alright technically. I can see why it is famous because it was almost enjoyable. Unfortunately for this film, I have read the book. The actual action that takes place in this megalithic tome would barely fill a childrens' picture book. That is why it is so disconcerting that they got most of the plot wrong. They got the right characters on the right boat and there was a white whale, but that's where the similarity ends. It's like if I asked someone to make coffee and they turned the switch on without plugging it in, tossed some grounds in the glass pot, spilled water on the table and placed a filter on top of the machine. They had so little to do and should have gotten everything right. I'm rating this poor because it's an alright movie, but it isn't Moby Dick by any stretch of the imagination. I would only recommend this to those who will never read the book.

Beat The Devil (1953)

An English adventure by John Huston starring Humphrey Bogart.
The leader of a crime gang and the owner of land rich in uranium meet with their wives in a port in Italy as they wait for the boat to be ready to leave. The wives get to know each other's husbands and seem to begin a simultaneous affair with these men, switching partners. When the boat leaves, the crime gang and the couples are on board when it sinks.
I liked the plot and thought it was interesting. Apparently, the script was written on a day-to-day basis while filming was taking place. The characters were good and the acting was adequate. There seemed to be something missing though, style. There was none. I'm rating this o.k. because it was mediocre and only slightly interesting.

The Man Who Would Be King (1975)

An adventure directed by John Huston, starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine.
2 Freemasonic English men travel to Afghanistan to become kings. They succeed in uniting the land and rising in status for a while, but nothing lasts forever.
Apparently, this is supposed to be some type of "hidden in plain view" masonic symbolism film. I didn't see it. There were some mentions of the craft and some symbols, but nothing to make me say "wow! That's it!". It must have been too obvious. What I did see was a cool adventure with a 300 ending "This god bleeds!". Yeah, I spoiled it, but that needed to be done. I thought that the guys having a hard time with their journey was the best part, aside from Sean Connery's voice. There's something about Sean Connery talking that entertains me. I'm rating this as a good adventure.
