8mm (1999)

A German American crime mystery directed by Joel Schumacher, starring Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare.
A private detective is sent by a rich woman to find the origin of a snuff film.
I did not like this one bit. It was formulaic and forgettable. The only good character was the guy who worked at the porno shop and he got dismissed quickly. He had clear back-story and could have worked well with Cage to solve this case. It's not that I have moral qualms about porn or snuff films. Folks can masturbate to whatever they want. Humans kill animals all the time and think nothing of it. I don't see how humans killing humans is all that different. I don't even want to write about this because I was counting down the minutes until it was over. I rate it shit. Do not watch!

Batman & Robin (1997)

An American action film directed by Joel Schumacher, starring George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle and Uma Thurman.
Batman and Robin face Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane with the help of Alfred's niece, Barbara.
This was cheesier than the 1960s TV show. Everything was "over the top", except for a few whispered dialogue scenes. My favorite part was Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. His one liners were great and he did a great job of playing the villain. I think that casting Uma Thurman in a low brow flick like this is an insult. I'm so used to seeeing her in much better stuff. In general, this was almost so bad it became good. A little bit more hokey and I would have been laughing through the entire duration. By the end, I was wishing that there had been "BIFF' and "KAPOW" pop-ups to at least make it more authentic. I rate this bad. Don't watch it.

The Lost Boys (1987)

A comedy horror directed by Joel Schumacher, starring Corey Haim, Kiefer Sutherland and Corey Feldman.
2 brothers and their divorced mother move to a new town to live with their grandfather. The older boy gets turned into a vampire while chasing a girl and the younger meets a pair of vampire hunters.
Everybody goes on and on about how good this film is, but I just don't think it's as cool as they say it is. It is, indeed, very popular, but that says nothing about quality. The soundtrack of mediocre and boring rock tunes is my main beef. The characters and plot are good, but the style wasn't to my liking. I'm not saying it's a bad film, just not as good as it's hyped up to be. I'm rating it adequate.

Falling Down (1993)

A drama directed by Joel Schumacher.
A man decides that he will attend his daughter's birthday party by any means necessary and against restraining orders. On his walk to this destination, he must overcome many obstacles. A police officer who is about to retire follows reports to track down the man.
This film has good plot and the characters are well developed. There is enough action to keep even the most adolescent viewers intrigued, and even some comedy. I like the idea of the cop and the criminal having simultaneous revelations about the ways of the world and how society functions (or malfunctions). I'm going to have to rate this good. Thanks, Bill.
