A French American drama directed by Jim Jarmusch, starring Bill Murray, Jeffrey Wright, Sharon Stone, Frances Conroy, Tilda Swinton, Julie Deply, Mark Webber, Chloe Sevigny and Christian McDonald.
A man receives a letter with no return address which says that his son is looking for him. His neighbor decides that the mystery must be solved and sends the man on a quest to visit the women he had relationships with.
This follows what I think of as Jarmusch's style by being a series of vignettes. I'm just saying this because of Night on Earth (1991) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). I have seen more of his work than that (Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) Mystery Train (1989)) and will be watching more. His style doesn't jump out and grab you, it invites you in. This seemed a little more tragic than his other works, but the pacing was dead on. The video looked good, but the audio was a little low. I really liked the daughter at the first house, but won't spoil it. I'm rating this good for being by a good director, having an all-star cast, presented as vignettes and the slow pacing. You should watch it.
In ancient Egyptian mythology, a dead person's soul would be weighed against the feather of truth in a ritual called a psychostasy. If their soul was lighter than the feather, it would ascend into the afterlife. Heavy souls were devoured by Maat, eater of the dead. Good films go to hard drive heaven while the recycle bin eats the rest.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
A British German drama directed by Jim Jarmusch, starring Tilda Swinton, Anton Yelchin, Jeffrey Wright and John Hurt.
A female vampire in Tangiers goes to visit her husband in Detroit, but her sister shows up and drinks the husband's zombie. They kick out the sister and both go to Tangiers in order to avoid being known.
Every once in a while, a truly goth movie comes along. I definitely appreciated the two hour duration and still wanted more. It went too quickly, even though the actual pacing was moderate. The plot was pretty sparse, but this was like a "slice of life" Mike Leigh film that doesn't need constant action and conflict. The characters were very much to my liking. I cared what happened to them, their dialogue was written in character and the actors did a great job playing their roles. These vampires are of the cleaner Hollywood style. They don't even drool blood like Radu from Subspecies. I liked that the husband wore all black and the wife wore light colors. The husband's house looked like musician's heaven (probably all real equipment) and Tangiers looked convincing. The camera-work and editing were seamless. The only time that I really noticed what the camera was doing was in spinning overhead shots and during the first blood drinking scene. All of the vampires drink blood from small wine glasses and are followed by the camera as they lean back, like in Trainspotting. The audio is where I have to get negative on this. The dialogue was audible and correctly mixed, but the music genre was not to my liking. The whole style, flavor and feeling of this was very cohesive and dark. Other critics give this film about a B average, which I think is abysmally low for something so gloomily beautiful. I rate this best because I wanted to watch it again right after it ended.

Ride with the Devil (1999)
An American war film directed by Ang Lee, starring Tobey Maguire, Jewel, Jeffrey Wright and Tom Wilkinson.
A group of southern militia fight the north during the civil war.
Boring. Most war films are all the same. The civil war is probably one of the worst, second only to WWII. The plot was meandering and murky with way too many characters that were not developed. The technical aspects were fine. I could hear and see what was going on, but what was going on was of no interest to me. I turned it off at 1:31/2:12 (in hours and minutes). In accordance with my turnoff policy, I rate this shit. DO NOT WATCH!!!
