A Successful Failure (1934)

An American comedy drama directed by Arthur Lubin.
An old newspaper worker loses his job and a co-worker friend quits because of this. They decide to work together and end up doing a radio show. The older man's family micro-manages his life and the daughter is dating a man.
Boring. This was just way too boring and slow paced for me. The antique style, audio and video didn't help either. There were video artifacts where the actual film itself had been damaged. The plot was pretty vague in some areas and generally threadbare all around. The characters were annoying and shallow. At least it wasn't painful to watch. I rate it poor and would advise against viewing.

Prison Break (1938)

An American drama adventure directed by Arthur Lubin.
An innocent fisherman confesses to a murder to protect a friend who he believes did it. He tries to serve his prison sentence and leave, but another prisoner provokes him and his stay is lengthened. This other man plans and begins to execute a prison break, but is stopped by the main character, earning his parole. He faces trouble finding a job because nobody wants to hire a paroled prisoner. Eventually, he begins to meet the men with whom he served time as they are let out of jail as well.
I know I gave away lots of the plot, but it seemed like it needed to be that way to communicate what happens in the film. The audio and video contained no annoying artifacts, but really showed their age anyway. I thought that the plot and characters were decent and the pacing seemed right. It was, however, a little lacking in the style department. It just wasn't very memorable or special in any way. I'm rating it adequate because it's an alright movie with no real problems. This also says something about what I've watched: I've seen so many disasters that just not having anything wrong with it gets a film this positive type of review.

The Thief of Baghdad (1961)

An Italian American fantasy adventure film directed by Arthur Lubin, starring Steve Reeves.
A poorly matched suitor comes to the palace to ask the princess' hand in marriage. A thief mugs the suitor and impersonates him to meet the princess and they fall in love. When the real suitor is found and the princess turns him down, he uses a love potion on her that will make her sick if she loves someone else. Since she loves a thief, she becomes sick and lots of men are sent to find the blue rose that will cure her illness.
Compared to the other films of this title, this one had a simpler plot that lacked many of the adventures of it's predecessors. There was nowhere near the amount of magic being used or fantastic genies and monsters. The video looked dirty like a '60s sword and sandal flick (hmmm, I wonder why) and the audio was inconsistent. Above all else, this lacked style and seemed forced or fake. If this was the only one, I would rate it o.k., but since there are 2 films that were made before this that are also better than this, I rate it bad. This is an empty shadow of the the films by this name. Don't watch it.
