A drama directed by Alan Parker.A young man in Dublin, Ireland decides that he wants to manage a band and gathers musicians. They learn soul songs, play shows and the trumpet player has sex with the chorus section. Everyone then turns against each other and the whole thing falls apart.I could see this happening in larger groups. I've only been in 3-5 person bands and in that setting, there's always one asshole who has to spoil it for everyone else (yeah, I've been that guy.). The soundtrack was like listening to one song through the whole film. I liked the style (of the film) and the best part was the manager interviewing himself repeatedly. The plot and characters were decent. I'm rating it adequate.
A drama directed by Alan Parker, starring Gene Hackman.Legal representatives from the north go to a southern town after civil rights workers are killed. They are there to track down the killers and have them prosecuted. This film was just over 2 hours, but it felt like 3. Everything about it was dull and boring. There were a few violent scenes, but nothing to get excited over. There was also a church burning scene that would make Count Grishnackh proud. I'm rating it poor for not holding my interest.
A mystery film noir directed by Alan Parker, starring Mickey Rourke and Robert DeNiro.A private detective is sent to find a certain man, but when blues musicians and voodoo practitioners get involved, things get complicated. This film's plot was very good. I really liked how things developed and changed. The characters were o.k., but they didn't play as big a role in the film as the plot. There were some musical scenes like the boy tap-dancing and the water dripping and turning to blood during the sex scene that were really well done. This film confirms my wild assumptions about the golden age of modern cinema and the general good quality of movies from 1987. I'm going to have to rate it good, just because it was.
A drama directed by Alan Parker.A man gets back from Vietnam to find his best friend in a mental institution. The friend thinks that he is a bird and the veteran reminds him of their past together to wake him up.The audio was bad, but the video was good.I don't really like Nicolas Cage and I was being distracted by more important matters while I tried to watch this. I did notice some in-the-closet homosexuality going on in this. I'm calling it o.k. because I could tell it wasn't bad, but it wasn't awesome either.
A drama directed by Alan Parker.A man is caught trying to smuggle hashish out of Istanbul and sentenced to prison there. After much torture and insanity, he is moved to the prison's sanitarium. The audio was bad and much of it was in Turkish with no subtitles. The video was good. This movie was so awesomely crazy. The plot was intense and the characters were very believable. If you like wild movies like I do, you'll like this one too. DEFINITELY recommended.
